Terms of Service

Version 1.0 · Effective date: [insert date] · These terms govern the 14 Scholars iOS and Android apps and this website

In short

1. Acceptance of these terms

By creating an account or using 14 Scholars, you agree to these Terms of Service and to our Privacy Policy. If you are accepting on behalf of an organization, you confirm you are authorized to bind that organization. You cannot accept these terms if you are under 18.

2. Eligibility & accounts

3. Our role

14 Scholars provides a venue where organizations post positions and candidates present profiles and applications. We are not a recruiter, employment agency, or placement service; we are not a party to any arrangement between an organization and a candidate; and we do not supervise, direct, or control how engagements are performed. All hiring decisions, screening, scheduling, supervision, and working arrangements rest solely with the parties themselves.

4. Posting rules & conduct

5. Your content

You keep ownership of everything you post — profiles, positions, messages, application materials. You grant us a non-exclusive, worldwide, royalty-free licence to host, reproduce, display, and distribute your content solely to operate and promote the service. You represent that you have the rights to what you post. We may remove or refuse content that breaches these terms, and we do not pre-screen content. Messages sent through the platform are covered by our Privacy Policy; we may review them only for safety, security, or compliance investigations.

6. Hiring relationships

7. Verification & safety

What “Verified” means here: only that an account’s email address has been confirmed through our sign-in provider. It does not mean we have conducted — or conduct — criminal record checks, vulnerable-sector checks, credential audits, interviews, or any investigation of any user.

Profiles and positions are user-generated content. Their appearance on 14 Scholars is not a recommendation, endorsement, certification, or guarantee of qualifications, character, orthodoxy, or suitability. Always do your own due diligence before engaging anyone.

8. Hadiya & payments

“Hadiya” means the compensation an organization voluntarily offers for teaching or related work, shown on positions for information only. All Hadiya and other compensation is negotiated, arranged, and paid solely between the organization and the candidate, off the platform. We are not a payment agent, escrow, or intermediary; we collect no fees; and we have no responsibility for payment amounts, timing, non-payment, or disputes about compensation. Candidates are responsible for taxes on amounts they receive. If we ever introduce facilitated payments, additional terms will apply and will be presented for acceptance beforehand.

9. Availability

The service is provided “as is” and “as available.” We do not promise uninterrupted or error-free operation, and we may modify, suspend, or discontinue features. App updates may change functionality, and older device or OS versions may lose support over time.

10. Disclaimers & liability

To the fullest extent permitted by law, we exclude liability for indirect, incidental, special, or consequential damages, and for lost data, lost profits, or harm arising from user conduct or engagement outcomes. Our total aggregate liability to you is capped at CAD $100 [or, if you paid fees, the amount paid to us in the preceding 12 months]. Nothing in these terms excludes liability that cannot be excluded under applicable law, including statutory consumer protections.

11. Indemnity

You agree to indemnify us against third-party claims arising from your content, your breach of these terms, your conduct toward other users, or the organization–candidate engagement itself — including claims by the other party to an engagement. This protection applies as long as you notify us promptly, let us participate in the defence, and cooperate reasonably.

12. Suspension & termination

13. Governing law & disputes

These terms are governed by the laws applicable in the Province of Ontario and the federal laws of Canada. Before starting any formal proceeding, please contact us first and give us 30 days to resolve the issue in good faith. Any dispute that is not resolved will be brought exclusively in the courts of Ontario, except that claims within the monetary jurisdiction of the Small Claims Court may be brought there instead. (If consumer-protection law where you live gives you different rights, those rights are unaffected.)

14. Changes to these terms

We may update these terms from time to time. For material changes we will give at least 30 days’ advance notice through the app or email and will ask you to re-accept the updated terms at next sign-in. Continued use after a non-material change takes effect constitutes acceptance. The version and effective date at the top of this page always reflect the current terms, and superseded versions remain available on request.
